Why I Interview Clients Before I Write
As a business owner, you know your business better than anyone. So when you hire a copywriter, it’s not because you don’t know what you want to say about your business. It’s because you don’t know how to say it.
This is why I like to interview my clients over the phone as part of the brief process.
It seems silly to me that I should ask you, the person who has openly said you are not keen to write, to spend time writing an extensive brief.
But in order to write well for you, I do need to understand exactly:
• who you are
• what you offer
• what you’re trying to achieve; and
• your point of difference
And when I learn this via a friendly chat over the phone (aka a phone interview), I usually find that clients open up about things they would never have even thought of if they were trying to write it all down.
Plus, I can hear in their voices what makes them most excited, what they don’t particularly like or want me to write about, and why they’re truly passionate about what they’re doing.
The phone interview works for all kinds of content – from web copy to articles and eBooks, media kits and video scripts.
Of course as a writer I can write about almost anything, even off the back of a paragraph brief (and I do, frequently!).
But if you want truly authentic content on your website, or in your marketing, the best source of authenticity is you. And a simple phone interview is often all that’s needed to help me capture that.
